Bob Marley’s songs are powerful. Listening to his song is like visiting a poetry class. The man is a poet. His lyrics speak to the depths of your soul – the words of his songs evoke ruminative thoughts. They are songs of posterity, for sure they will outlast us all. They clamped onto your soul. I can’t decide whether it’s the rhythm or the lyrics that draws me to them. All I know is that together, they are intoxicating.

I thought using his lyrics as captions to some of the beautiful pictures of Israel I took last summer is quite fitting, mostly because he sings a lot about Zion and Jerusalem, but also because of their beauty.

Sea of Galilee israel

Sea of Galilee

“In the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty”

How often do we forget that everything we could ever need, we already have? Everything else is noise to our soul. Staring at this lake, which they oddly call a sea, I couldn’t help but ponder upon the one who walked on these waters. He caused the rising and the falling of so many in the House of Judah and the Gentiles, it is so surreal to think that His ministry started here.

IDF soldiers western wall jerusalem israel

Western Wall, Jerusalem

“That until that day
The dream of lasting peace,
World citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion to be pursued,
But never attained –
Now everywhere is war – war”

Yad vashem jerusalem

Yad Vashem, Jerusalem

“Man to man is so unjust, children
Ya don’t know who to trust”

Walking the entire length of this museum is like a day trip to hell. The many things that led to the Holocaust: the rise of Nazi Germany, the complacency of the nations, the indifference of many and finally, the vile and murderous actions of Hitler and his army, all of these are unfathomable to me. It leads nowhere but to an abyss of despair, that hollow black pit in your soul where there is no way out. I can’t say for sure which bucket on this rat race we call humanity I would’ve been ended on, had I lived to experience that era. I don’t pretend to be righteous, I could only hope that had I the misfortune of being born in that time and place as a Gentile, that I would’ve been brave enough to do the right thing, even if it meant death.

Jerusale israel tribe of dan

Tribe of Dan, walking the streets of Jerusalem

“Old pirates, yes, they rob i;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took i
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the ’and of the almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly”

Masada israel 3

Masada

“I’m gonna sleep by the dead sea
And rise up with the birds from the hills
And clean up my sins
While the birds sing
I’m gonna walk up to the top
Of the rock of sacrifice
Cause I know now, that life
Ain’t no dice
Yes I know now, that life is a sacrifice”

It was a very hot day when we made our way on top of this arid fort. Masada has long become a symbol of the resilience of the Jewish people. Israeli Defense Force soldiers are being inducted here on a regular basis and the mantra that “Masada shall not fall again” echoes throughout its vast expanse.

According to Jewish historian, Josephus, hundreds of men, women and children committed mass suicide here when it became imminent that the advancing Roman soldiers would capture it. It was the last Jewish stronghold, the last to fall under the Roman rule in 74 CE. Israel will never be under Jewish rule again, not for the next nearly 2000 years.

Did you recognize any of these songs? There are so many beautiful and poetic pictures I took in Israel and Jordan that it’s impossible to capture them in one post. Not to mention the fact that Bob Marley has endless songs with epical characteristics. I’ll try to do more of these posts in the very near future.

I don’t always blog about matters that are so serious. Sometimes, I would review movies and books and, when I’m having a particularly creative streak, there would be some haiku and poems here and there too. Lastly, I love fashion and photography so if you fancy any one of these things, follow me on WordPress.
